The Top 5 Things to Do on Modafinil

Modafinil is popular among a wide variety of people because of its ability to make normally boring tasks easy to handle. With that in mind, let’s look at…

The top 5 things to do while you’re on Modafinil.

Study

Of course this is first on the list! Students are by far the largest group of modafinil users. In many universities significant percentages of students report having used modafinil recently for studying. In some places this is over 25% of the student body, an astounding number when you consider that in the case of large campuses this represents over 25,000 people.

Why is Modafinil so good for studying? It helps you focus and concentrate on something for a long period of time, which makes it perfect for reading through those thick textbooks and dense PDFs. As an added bonus, it helps you to stay awake, which is great if you have to pull an all-nighter to get ready for that exam.

While there’s currently no real evidence that Modafinil improves memory and learning, you can expect to at least learn at your normal pace while getting more done.

Test-Taking

Naturally if Modafinil is good for those long study sessions, it should help you crunch the questions on your upcoming exam, right? Today’s exams are getting longer, and standardized testing in high schools and increasingly in universities demands more time and energy from students than they naturally have. Consider that some exams can last upwards of 3 hours. How do you maintain your focus on a grueling paper without some help? Modafinil can sharpen your brain when the test hits the table.

Writing

I write on Modafinil, and why wouldn’t I? It helps me to sit down and pound out the work, something notoriously difficult for a chronic procrastinator like myself. Writing can become tedious after a while, making it difficult to put together a long quality writing session. With Modafinil guiding you, you can settle into your favorite chair and type until your fingers bleed.

Obviously this is a huge advantage for anyone working on term papers or their thesis. Research papers benefit as well. I find that with my university work I’m able to dive deeper into the discussion and get absorbed into the research, producing quality references and a better paper overall.

Careful if you need to write something creative. Modafinil has been shown to limit divergent thinking, the key to coming up with clever solutions to problems.

Paperwork

Work in an office? Most people do nowadays. Nothing sucks the joy out of life like a stack of paperwork. It seems that no job can steer clear of the mountains of forms and documents needed by today’s companies and governments. Take it from a teacher, Marie, who gave us her story and highlighted how much Modafinil had helped.

At the end of the semester I have to make reports for EVERY student I taught. In a packed urban public school system that means writing around 150 separate documents. The worst part is how useless these are. Nobody really reads them, yet they’re required by the school board. A couple of years ago I discovered Modafinil and now it’s my secret weapon when the paperwork piles up. I actually got all 147 of my students’ files finished in a single day this year. I’m so proud! Couldn’t have done it without the teacher’s little helper though.

Burn through that boring paperwork in record time with Modafinil.

Cleaning

Another thankless, dreary task that simply must be done. Modafinil’s gift of making even the most mind-numbing activities bearable comes in handy here. I tend to do a single chore at a time and take a needless break between each one, which only drags out the process. With Modafinil however, I power through the whole workload in a single rush that leaves my flat dazzling in just a couple of hours.

Best part? You’ll be more thorough. Just like how Modafinil will lead you down the research rabbit hole, you’ll find your cleaning to be much more detailed and meticulous. You’ll never see me lift up the microwave and clean under there unless a round white pill made its way into my system that morning.

What else does Modafinil help you with? Share your stories and comments with us. We love hearing from you!

Can Modafinil Treat Methamphetamine Addiction?

One of modafinil’s most surprising potential uses is in its ability to treat addictions. Studies have strongly supported modafinil as an aid to recovering addicts, particularly for cocaine use. But what does the data say about methamphetamine?

The global meth problem

Meth might not be the first drug you think of when addiction comes to mind, yet in many countries it’s extremely prevalent. Around 18 million Americans have tried meth recently, and as many as some 12 million are regular users.

Meth is very popular in Europe, particularly in Scandinavia. In Thailand, for instance, meth is so widespread that it can be found in common markets right next to vegetables and chicken, despite its illegality. In Australia where it is very difficult to get drugs, meth can go for over $300 per gram.

Recent Thai news reported that the government is contemplating decriminalizing the drug since users are afraid to seek help due to the strict drug laws currently in place. They also believe that using modafinil can help these addicts.

The multiple-Emmy-winning series Breaking Bad revolved around meth. Clearly meth is a global issue that has made its way into our pop culture.

Modafinil as a treatment for Meth abuse

Currently there is not much information on modafinil for meth addiction. The most recent study with positive results came in 2010 and was carried out on rats. The idea was to get rats addicted and then see if modafinil could reduce their regular use. The study was successful, although not enough to get the rats to stop taking meth altogether.

When it comes to actual human trials, the evidence is slimmer and less encouraging. The largest study comes from 2011 where 210 participants were placed into three equal groups of Placebo, Modafinil 200mg, and Modafinil 400mg. Over 12 weeks of monitoring the study found that neither group outperformed the others.

What they did find was that patients were not regularly taking their modafinil which may have been the problem. When they looked at all 210 participants, those who consistently tested positive for modafinil were likely to have longer runs of abstinence. So perhaps modafinil helped out.

Another 2009 study, this one on just 71 people, came up empty handed and found no evidence to support modafinil use.

Why modafinil might work

Critics of these studies point out that modafinil has potential that simply hasn’t been realized yet. Since modafinil is very safe and well tolerated, and non-addictive, it could be very helpful. On top of that, it improves cognition and mood, two areas that are dramatically affected by meth withdrawal.

Will we see Modafinil Clinics in the future? Probably not, at least not without greater funding into these studies.

Is Modafinil Safe to Take During Pregnancy

Don’t Take Modafinil during Pregnancy

Recently this blog tackled several important questions about reproductive health: Premature Ejaculation and Women’s hormonal birth control. We add to that series today with an investigation into modafinil’s effects on pregnant women. Based on the FDA’s classification of modafinil, this blog and most medical professionals would recommend you do NOT take modafinil during pregnancy.

How the FDA classifies medicines for pregnancy

The US FDA is the best source for a drug’s safety during pregnancy since part of the approvals process for any medication is to provide at least some basic evaluation of the effects on fetuses and breastmilk. Based on these results, the FDA categorizes all medicines into 5 groups: A, B, C, D, and X. It works like this:

  • Category A: Proven completely safe
  • Category B: No evidence to suggest any risk, but not proven safe
  • Category C: Animal studies show adverse effects, but no human trial evidence
  • Category D: Evidence of adverse effects on human fetuses
  • Category X: Proven to produce extremely negative effects.

In all of these categories the common thread is how much evidence exists to support the data. Category B, for instance, could be just as safe as A, but in order to move into the A group studies must consistently demonstrate no negative impact whatsoever. Likewise, harm to animals is good enough for category C, but D requires evidence of effects on humans.

Why does the scale jump from D to the rather terrifying X rating? It all comes down to safety.

In categories C and D, there is evidence of negative effects, but the benefits of the medicine may outweigh those negative effects on the fetus. For instance, many anti-anxiety medications are found in categories C and D. A doctor might argue that it’s better for the mother to take these pills and risk some minor harm to the baby, rather than not take them and perhaps suffer an anxiety attack that leads to a miscarriage.

But Category X is reserved for substances that will always harm the fetus more than it helps the mother, for instance many of the cholesterol-lowering drugs are in this group. A little extra cholesterol probably won’t kill a young mother, but would absolutely kill the baby.

Modafinil’s FDA classification for pregnancy

Modafinil is category C, meaning that no proof of human damage exists, but there is reason to be concerned. It’s recommended that women do not take modafinil while they are pregnant. Considering the risk-reward calculation, it’s almost impossible to imagine a scenario where modafinil was absolutely necessary. While you might want to have some extra energy to help you carry that baby around inside of you, don’t take modafinil if you’re pregnant.

What about breastfeeding?

Modafinil is also excreted through breastmilk, and while there are currently no studies that show what happens to babies who are exposed to modafinil, doctors agree that it’s best to avoid taking modafinil while you breastfeed.

Modafinil has a potent effect on the brain, and in a brain that is still forming and developing, it’s unclear if this effect could have a negative impact down the line. Modafinil has been approved for young children, but not babies. People want babies to sleep, not stay awake. So given the lack of a practical application, there is no research.

So listen up pregnant women, stay away from modafinil!

Modafinil’s Potential for Abuse

Modafinil’s low potential for abuse proven by studies

One of the reasons modafinil has been praised as an effective treatment for so many conditions is that it has a very low potential for abuse. But just what does that mean? What constitutes abuse? And what is a low potential? To answer these questions we need to analyze what scientists and researchers examine as criteria for abuse, and explore modafinil’s effects in controlled studies.

How abuse is defined

Drug abuse is effectively the use of any drug with negative consequencces beyond the expected side-effects of the drug itself. So it’s not abuse to take your chemotherapy medicine just because it has some negative consequences, nor is it a problem to take some illegal drugs provided they don’t cause you significant problems.

But what researchers have to consider is the potential for abuse. This is determined by a number of factors, and a full guideline by the FDA outlines some of the most important variables.

Laboratory tests will give rats an option to eat a regular food pellet or press a lever for a pellet that contains the drug being tested. If the rat consistently selects the drug, then it’s clear that it has a higher potential for abuse.

Tests are also done to figure out what effect the drug has on the brain. Dopamine is particularly a concern. Dopamine is the neurotransmitter that tells your brain to do something again by giving it a pleasurable feeling. A high dopamine response is characteristic of cocaine for example.

Modafinil’s potential for drug abuse

Modafinil has been shown to increase dopamine uptake, causing mild sensations of euphoria which some users report. In a similar study, it actually multiplied the effects of cocaine significantly.

Another study showed that it has a very low potential for abuse compared to common amphetamine drugs, which are often used for the same effects. Ritalin and Adderall fall into this category. Users did not feel the urge to re-dose, a very important indicator of safety, as that urge is connected to addiction.

Is off-label use abuse?

This question is one of the big ones pushing further research into modafinil’s potential for abuse. As many students and young workers take modafinil for off-label benefits, there is concern that they may develop a modafinil habit.

The key thing to consider is whether your modafinil use is affecting your life in a negative way. If you can’t function without it, then maybe it’s a problem. If you’re taking too much and losing sleep, which leads to taking more modafinil the next day to compensate, then you’re in a potentially dangerous loop.

Be conscious of how you use your medicine and avoid patterns of behavior that put you at risk. Modafinil itself is relatively harmless and unlikely to become a problem, but when misused it could lead to that exact situation.

Can Modafinil and Armodafinil save you from Jet Lag?

Modafinil and Armodafinil can help travellers with jet lag

One of modafinil and armodafinil’s approved treatments is for shift-work sleep disorder. This condition occurs when your circadian rhythms, your body’s internal clock, becomes maladjusted to your working hours due to changing your work schedule. For example, if you go from working afternoons to mornings, you may have trouble adjusting because your body isn’t able to anticipate the change.

So what does this have to do with jet lag and travel? Curiously, everything. Jet lag is effectively the same exact problem as shift-work sleep disorder, only caused by a different situation: Travel.

What causes Jet Lag?

Very simply, jet lag occurs when you travel from one time zone to another. The effect it has on a person is generally proportional to the number of zones crossed. A 3-hour change will usually have some effect.

You wake up at 6 to catch a flight at 9. You fly west for 5 hours and the time changes by 3 hours.  You arrive at 11 AM local time, despite your body thinking that it’s 2 PM. You normally go to bed at 10, and feel tired already at 9 because travel takes the energy out of you. Except locally it’s only 6, and if you go to bed now you’ll end up waking up super early the next day, and the cycle will continue. That, in a nutshell, is jet lag.

How modafinil can prevent jet lag.

There are two ways to use modafinil or armodafinil to solve your jet lag problems. The key is to use modafinil to stay awake for the first couple of days in your new destination, this way you can power through the inevitable tiredness.

If you are travelling westward, you’re going to gain hours in your day. Take modafinil during the day, before your flight, and try to take it later than you normally would. This way the 12-hour effect will extend into the evening and you can sleep at a normal local hour.

If you are going towards the east, you’re going to lose hours that day. This means you will likely end up staying up late that night, as your body thinks it’s earlier than it really is. The resulting lack of sleep means that you should take modafinil in the morning when you wake up for your daily routine. This way, even though you’ve slept very little, modafinil can carry you through the day.

The key to recovering from jet lag is to resume your regular sleeping hours as soon as possible. You can actually cure it in a single day if you do it right. Naturally this is very difficult, so use modafinil to give yourself an edge.

It’s worth pointing out that doctors

Modafinil can help to treat Premature Ejaculation (PE)

Our last article talked about women’s reproductive health as it examined the impact modafinil can have on hormonal birth control. Today we switch sides and discuss the possible benefits of modafinil on men. While it might be an awkward subject to talk about, studies have shown tha tmodafinil can be used to treat premature ejaculation, or PE.

The PE problem

Surveys show mixed numbers but often conclude that at least 1 in 5 men is affected by PE, and most researchers guess that the number is higher due to the fact that men tend to underreport their sexual problems. PE in particular can be a very frustrating condition and carries with it serious mental stigmas that can lead to feelings of inadequacy, embarrassment, and even depression.

Modafinil to treat PE

Current PE treatments are typically of two varieties. One involves the use of numbing agents, which cut down on the pleasure a man experiences during sex and, hopefully, increase his performance time. However, this method has the obvious drawback of reduced pleasure and can be uncomfortable to use, requiring the application of topical creams or gels.

The other option is to take anti-depressant pills called SSRIs. This is by far the most effective PE treatment, but naturally presents other side effects and potential mental issues. Antidepressants were not designed for people with normal healthy brains, making this treatment potentially risky for some. In addition, the pills in question tend to be very expensive.

But a study from 2009 on rats, followed up by a 2015 investigation on humans, has shown that modafinil can dramatically increase the duration of sexual activity. In one man that was tested his average time went from less than two minutes to about fifteen, well above the average.

New types of Modafinil for PE

For modafinil to work effectively against PE, the sexual activity needs to occur during the half-life of modafinil. For regular modafinil blends this means within 10-12 hours of dosing. Most people take it in the morning, but then the pill has worn off by the time your dinner date is over. But because modafinil also has the tendency to keep you wide awake, it wouldn’t make sense to take it immediately before having sex. So we’re stuck somewhere in the middle.

A patent was filed a few years ago for various forms of “on-demand” modafinil. This would use a different form of modafinil, the d-modafinil molecule, which only has a half-life of 3-4 hours. It could be delivered in other forms besides a pill, such as an inhaler or chewing gum. The shorter half-life means that you could easily take this modafinil in the evening, have a fun night, and fall asleep shortly after.

So men, keep your eyes peeled for more news on modafinil, and women, maybe buy your man a pack or two and give it a test drive if he’s been leaving you less than satisfied.

Does Modafinil Affect Birth Control

Modafinil can affect hormonal birth control methods

Modafinil’s popularity is greatest among young adults in university. Coincidentally, this is also the group that uses hormonal birth control the most. However, there are fears that modafinil can adversely affect the effectiveness of birth control pills. Since these two groups overlap considerably, modafinil could put thousands of young people at risk of an unwanted pregnancy, which could be detrimental to the lives of students.

Hull University, in Kingston upon Hull England, even went as far as to send a message to its students warning them about the potential pregnancy risk.

What birth control methods are affected?

Modafinil stimulates the production of a common enzyme in the body. This enzyme is responsible for breaking down many different compounds, including medicines. If you have more of the enzyme, your body will break down the compounds faster, removing them from the bloodstream.

There are many forms of birth control, and not all of them employ hormones. For instance, there are many IUDs that are hormone-free. Only certain types of hormonal pills are at risk.

So far there is only one clear study on the subject which tested 41 women who were taking two types of hormonal birth control, estradiol and triazolam.

The results showed that the amount of triazolam in the bloodstream was reduced significantly by modafinil, but that estradiol was unaffected. If the amount of the drug goes below a certain threshold, then its effects may not work and you could be at risk for an unwanted pregnancy. The makers of Provigil recommend avoiding modafinil if you are taking any kind of hormonal birth control, just to be safe.

How to avoid birth control complications

Keep in mind that modafinil can only reduce the effectiveness of birth control when both are taken at the same time. If you take modafinil on Monday and your birth control every single day, then it’s possible that your birth control will not be as effective on that Monday and even the following Tuesday.

Most modafinil users don’t take it every day, so first you should be more mindful of when you take it.

Second, if you have taken modafinil and decide to have sex, you should use a second contraceptive method, preferably a condom for those situations.

Finally, the most important thing to do would be to talk to your doctor, especially your OB/GYN, who can recommend different birth control methods that don’t interact with modafinil, or let you know whether your method is safe to use with modafinil.

As so many people order modafinil online, they rarely consider how it may interact with other medicines. This is one of the dangers of modafinil. Pharmaceutical compounds are complex and can have a litany of bizarre interactions with other drugs, many of them go unnoticed and seem harmless. But as this case shows, it’s important to make sure that anything you take will not be affected by modafinil, or vice versa.

Modafinil Banned from eSports

eSports and Modafinil

eSports events can regularly pack stadiums

eSports events can regularly pack stadiums

eSports, or in more colloquial terms “competitive video gaming”, is a booming industry.  Estimates put it at over $500 million annually. In eSports, live events host gamers from around the world competing at the highest levels for the most popular games.

While it may seem surreal to think of someone as a professional video game player, it’s possible to earn over $100,000 a year this way. The prizes come from advertisers who take advantage of the huge online streaming community, as well as sponsors. While only a few thousand people may attend an actual event, another 10 million may be watching online. But that prize pool is limited to just a handful of players, with only about 60 taking home more than $100k a year.

Modafinil in the world of eSports

Just as we’ve seen in universities and even workplaces, modafinil can be used to get a step ahead of the competition. Video games demand constant attention and focus, especially since most of the competitive games are first-person shooters or sports games in which a tenth of a second can mean a loss. Adderall and Ritalin have been widely used but modafinil has been spotted more recently as studies show that it is safer than taking amphetamine-based pills.

Practice sessions can often go for hours a day. For the full-time competitive gamer, it’s no different than your regular 9-5 job. Again, modafinil can improve your ability to stay focused on these long practice runs.

The eSports league bans Modafinil

Modafinil was banned from athletic events by the World Anti-Doping Agency after several track and field and cycling competitors used it to gain an advantage. The Electronic Sports League, or ESL, decided to adopt the Anti-Doping Agency’s list of banned substances for its events last year, and since then drug tests are administered randomly to participants in ESL sanctioned events. A cheek swab picks up traces of the banned substances.

Is it fair to ban modafinil from eSports?

As this blog has discussed in the past, there are ethical issues with modafinil in different fields. I have argued in the past that taking modafinil for an advantage in the workplace or in schools is perfectly acceptable because you are not harming anyone else or taking anything away from another person.

But sports is a different story. One of the reasons we universally admire athletes is because their natural talent and ability is so far beyond ours that we can only stand in awe, impressed. When LeBron James leaps up and slam dunks a ball, or when Messi blasts a free kick into the corner of the net, we know without a doubt that we could never do that, and it amazes us. Doping detracts from this as the ability gained is not entirely natural.

eSports is similar. Many people dismiss eSports as child’s play but the growing industry shows that it is in fact a serious venture. And its players should be subject to rules. Modafinil and other nootropics would actually give an eSports player a bigger benefit than someone in traditional physical sports.

Using modafinil to practice is not illegal according to the ESL. Drug tests are not given except at events. I think this is an acceptable way to improve your skills. But if you’re going to compete in any events, abide by the laws at hand.

Still, it’s amazing to see just how many places modafinil has crept into. Wherever there’s competition, someone will be seeking an advantage, and it’s clear that modafinil does provide an advantage in eSports.

Modafinil Manages Sleep Debt

Use Modafinil to Fix your Sleep Debt

Picture this: You just got home from a real late night out with your friends and it’s 4 AM. You need to be up at 6 to be at work by 7, and there’s no calling off. You’re in a pickle, what do you do?

While you probably should have planned your activities more wisely, these things happen. Whether you’re a college student who studies (or partied) ‘til dawn, a parent whose children didn’t stop crying all night, or just a regular human dealing with life emergencies that come up, we all have nights where we don’t sleep as much as we should.

Even our regular sleep is declining. The CDC in the US reported that over 30% of adults get 6 or less hours of sleep a night, below the recommended 7 hours or more.

The result is that more people are experiencing sleep deficit, also known as sleep debt. And studies have proven that sleeping for 6 hours a night for 10 nights in a row (a deficit of 10-20 hours) has the exact same effects as missing a whole night of sleep.

Using Modafinil to Cope with Sleep Debt

The classic advice has always been the obvious advice: Get more sleep! Naps are proven to work, but of course we can’t all be nodding off in the middle of class or work. If you can’t adjust your schedule to allow for more sleeping time, then modafinil is an excellent short-term solution.

A 1999 study showed that when people had been sleep deprived (missing one night’s sleep or more) modafinil restored their performance to near-baseline levels. Interestingly, these subjects had no problems taking naps while on modafinil. It seems that when your body is truly sleep deprived, modafinil won’t interfere with sleeping.

And even doctors on night shift found modafinil extremely beneficial. A clinical trial in 2012 tested modafinil on doctors who had to work all night. A 200mg dose was given to them towards the end of their shift, and then the doctors took tests that measured their decision making, working memory, and planning abilities around 8 AM, after modafinil had taken effect.

The results were impressive. Placebo participants scored much lower than the modafinil tested doctors.

Why Sleep Debt Matters

The effects of sleep debt are detrimental to society. Car accidents increase greatly as studies show that driving without sleep is just as bad as drink driving. Companies lose productivity as workers cannot perform at their regular levels. Students’ grades suffer. And in the case of professions like doctors or emergency rescue workers, a lack of sleep could literally mean the loss of someone’s life.

While modafinil is useful for combatting sleep debt, it still is no replacement for actual sleep. While you might be able to get away with a day or two without proper shut-eye, don’t make skipping sleeping your routine.

Modafinil is a Diuretic, What you need to know

Modafinil is a Diuretic, it makes you lose water

For most people modafinil presents no serious side effects, and even minor ones are uncommon. However, there is one effect that occurs in the vast majority of people, so much so that it’s not considered a “side effect” but simply a natural part of taking modafinil.

Losing water on modafinil

Modafinil is a diuretic, a compound that causes your body to shed its water weight. Many stimulants have this effect to varying degrees. Other products are made specifically for this purpose, often called “water pills”. You might see these advertised as a way to lose weight quickly, though that is risky and even dangerous behavior.

Modafinil’s Diuretic Effect

Obviously water tends to leave your body in more or less one way: Urination. When you take modafinil, you’ll find that you need to run to the bathroom more frequently than normal. This is a perfectly normal effect, so don’t worry. But you should take some precautions.

How a diuretic works

Your kidneys act as filters for the liquids passing through your body. Whatever doesn’t get absorbed back into the bloodstream gets sent out as urine. Diuretics prevent the kidneys from absorbing sodium, potassium, and sometimes calcium. These three elements are more commonly known as electrolytes, those minerals that sports drinks like Gatorade love to harp on about.

Think about how salt quickly soaks up water. That same process is going on inside your body. If you can’t absorb the salt attached to the water, you’ll need to pass it out. That’s what’s going on when you take modafinil.

Is modafinil bad for your kidneys?

When Provigil was released, the FDA recommended that patients with kidney issues avoid taking it. Your liver does the majority of the processing for modafinil, with only about 10% of it being absorbed in the kidneys. So modafinil shouldn’t cause any damage to your kidneys if they are healthy.

In the kidneys modafinil is turned into modafinil acid as it comes into contact with the electrolytes and water in your kidneys. In people with renal issues this can cause irritation and pain. It also explains why your urine can smell stronger or have a different color when you take modafinil. Interestingly, some ethnicities don’t process this acid as well as others.

Avoid dehydration when you take modafinil

A diuretic can cause you to pass an extra liter of water per day! In response you should increase your water intake. However water alone may not be enough. Keep in mind that you are also losing those electrolytes. A sports drink can replenish those valuable components almost instantly, and so can eating balanced meals.

Going to the bathroom more frequently is a fairly generous offer when you consider modafinil’s potent effects on cognition and concentration.
