Modafinil Seizures by US Customs Increase

Exam season is just around the corner and more students are turning to modafinil to stay sharp and prepare for the rigorous tests that lie ahead. The trend continues to grow despite opposition from the United States Customs department.

Seizures of Ritalin, Adderall, and even modafinil have more than doubled over the last five years. It’s been proven to work as students find themselves able to concentrate better and learn more just in time for exams which may determine whether they pass or fail an academic semester. And more of these medicines are being ordered through online pharmacies without a prescription.

The United States has a very strict no-imports policy when it comes to prescription medicines. While the people who buy them are almost never charged with a crime unless they are caught importing massive quantities with intent to resell, the law is still firmly in place. The most common reason politicians give for these rules is to protect consumers from potentially dangerous consequences. Of course, severe side effects do occur in a small percentage of the population, and without a doctor to supervise, the chances of this occurring are greater.

However, modafinil has been proven to be safe for everyone and even the most serious side effects are not life threatening. Customs officials, in response, bring up another issue: Faulty products with the potential to kill. Yet even though the counterfeit and subpar quality drug industry pulls in over $70 billion dollars annually, few if any deaths occur in modern countries. It makes sense: Why would a counterfeit drug maker want to kill their customers? The truth is that they often put very little of the active ingredient and rely on the placebo effect. You take a pill that in reality does almost nothing to you, but you think you’re getting something real, and you sense some vague effect.

The real reason customs enforces this law so strictly is that it protects the US pharmaceutical industry, the largest in the world. Modafinil imported from India is made by reputable companies with great safety records. Modafinil itself has not been found to cause death or serious side effects. But the brand-name Provigil costs over $40 a pill in the United States, and to keep the profits coming in the US needs to make sure that individuals don’t import pills from abroad.

So know that while you may be placing an order from a trustworthy vendor, your order may not make it into the United States, especially as they are on high alert during exam season. Having said that, it’s impossible for them to filter every shipment that comes into the country as the USPS reports around 500 million packages delivered every day. While much of that is domestic, it means that inspecting every shipment is unrealistic.

Websites with User Reviews for Modafinil

This blog is full of information about how modafinil works and how it can benefit you. But don’t just take our word for it. If you’re interested in reading more from actual people who have tried modafinil, we’ve compiled some helpful links to get you started.

Best User Reviews for Modafinil: Erowid

One of the oldest non-profit websites related to drugs and their effects, Erowid is an incredible source of information for people who are curious about trying just about anything. They have pages on common substances such as caffeine as well as research chemicals you’ve never heard of. Erowid is run by very dedicated people and filters out experience reports that are not well-written or that make sweeping generalizations. As a result, you get more objective and precise information. There is a page specifically for modafinil experiences, which are broken down in to good ones, bad ones, and everything in between. Erowid also doesn’t post experiences that repeat what another one already says, so if you see 5 good ones and 4 bad ones, you should not assume that this means the chances of a bad experience are around 50/50. Rather, it just means that Erowid is looking to represent all possible outcomes.

Drugs-forum.com is a place where people can gather to talk about literally any drug that’s available, from certified pharmaceuticals to illegal substances. This site is a great source of honest information from users, but often lacks some of the technical details you might find on other websites. Keep in mind that the users here have usually tried many other drugs, so their responses may be wildly different. Reading about people trying modafinil with other substances is common. The biggest advantage is that the forum has over 230,000 members, meaning that you will likely be able to find a wide sample of users. Check out modafinil related posts here.

This site is considered the most reputable source of reviews for prescription medications. User reviews must mention specifically which condition they took the medicine for, including off-label ones such as ADHD which have not been fully approved by the FDA yet. There are nearly 200 reviews for modafinil with an average score of 8.2 on their ten-point scale. One of the downsides of these kinds of reviews is of course the fact that many people may give the medicine a 1 or a 10 without carefully considering the results. Regardless this is a great resource if you have a specific condition and would like to find other people’s experiences with modafinil.

Reddit Afinil

Reddit has a section for just about everything, including some things you probably didn’t even know existed (and maybe didn’t want to). The –afinil sub contains plenty of threads about modafinil and armodafinil, many of which discuss purchasing and vendor-related experiences. However, they also include reviews of specific suppliers. This is exactly what you need if you’ve been thinking about buying modafinil but aren’t sure where to start. Likewise, you can find good user reviews and personal experiences from people of all walks of life.

Brain Meta is one of my favorite sites because of its scientific nature. It focuses heavily on nootropics but does so in an intelligent way. Exactly what a nootropic forum should be. Conversations tend to be of a more intellectual and analytical nature, which can lead to some high-quality reviews. Unfortunately one of the downsides is that the site boasts fewer users and thus there are less experiences to sift through. When you do find a thread, you can expect it to contain several profound posts and in-depth discussion.

An educated decision is always a better decision. If you’re thinking about trying modafinil you should read up on these user reviews to get a better idea of how it may work for you.

Modafinil as a Treatment for PAH

Modafinil is well known now for how great it handles things like promoting wakefulness, treating narcolepsy, excessive daytime sleepiness from sleep apnea, shift work sleep disorder, helping immensely with focus, and even treating stimulant addiction. However, there are many “off-label” uses that have appeared, from treating neurological fatigue to a recent discovery that shows it could help with Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, or PAH. New information published less than a month ago shows promising potential for patients with PAH.

PAH: Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension

If you’re wondering what PAH actually is, it’s a life–threatening condition that can get worse over time. It occurs when the very small arteries that go from your heart to your lungs become constricted or blocked making it harder for the blood to flow through them and raising your blood pressure. This condition causes the heart to pump harder to keep the blood flowing and will eventually weaken the heart muscles and can lead to heart failure. This condition can be caused for a number of reasons, including genetics, but is mostly due to various conditions that tend to cause high blood pressure (ex. Sleep apnea, emphysema, and more). You might not even notice some of the symptoms for a long time, though they include chest pain, fatigue, passing out, and swelling of the ankles and legs.

Can Modafinil Treat PAH?

It was recently found that modafinil can help improve PAH for those that are suffering from it due to the fact that it causes vasorelaxation (widening of the blood vessels) and helps to decrease medial thickening through down regulation of certain receptors, specifically the ET-1, ERA, and KCa3. In layman’s terms, it blocks the signals that tell an artery to get thicker. What’s unusual is that most stimulants do the exact opposite: Causing vasoconstriction and raising blood pressure. This meaningful study was conducted in Seoul, South Korea among various departments in the Ewha Womans University. Although this study was done on rats, the success is great news because human tests will follow very shortly and this could open up a whole new use for modafinil that is no longer just “off-label”.

The methods that were used in this study was done on six week old Sprague Dawley rats. The groups were split up into three with a control group that was given a saline solution, the modafinil group, and a group that was given monocrotaline (MCT). MCT actually creates PAH in rats, so this would make that group stand out more in the study. The modafinil group showed large signs of improvement as blood pressure dropped. The dosage of modafinil that was used was 50mg/kg, which would be a very large dose in a human. More research is needed to determine how much is necessary for human trials.

What’s next?

Modafinil keeps presenting new and exciting possibilities. Researchers love it because it has a proven track record of safety and has little to no potential for abuse or addiction. This is one of the most important aspects of a medication for patients with chronic conditions. Since they’ll likely be taking their pills often and potentially forever, it’s important to make sure that the medicine doesn’t do more harm than good in the long term. Modafinil fits the bill. It is very likely that in the future there will be more studies finding more uses for modafinil.

Keep in mind that human trials are still a ways off, and you should consult a medical professional if you have a condition like PAH before using modafinil. Although it is one of the safest drugs on the market it is always necessary to get a professional opinion.

The Future of Modafinil

Will Modafinil be replaced any time soon?

The pharmaceutical world is constantly changing. Companies and researchers discover new things about old drugs while constantly searching for the next big hit. Modafinil is no exception to this. It was not the original –afinil, but it has been one of the longest lasting and is becoming the most widely used. So what is next for modfinil and who will take its place?

Not digital, Analog

As you probably know modafinil is one of the most common and widely used drugs for focus and wakefulness because of its safety. However, there are already substances out on the market and in development that are analogs of modafinil and could end up replacing it. Analogs are similar drugs that produce nearly identical effects. Many labs create these analogs for drugs to get better or longer lasting effects, or to reduce harmful side effects. Armodafinil is one of the only similar drugs on the market that is known to produce similar effects and that has had research done. This can be found under the brand name Nuvigil. Since the two are so similar with very little differences you might not notice if someone switched your pill. Armodafinil is meant to provide you with the focus and wakefulness that you get with modafinil and to keep that safety, which studies have shown so far to be true.

Future Hits, or Future Failures?

There are other analogs, but it is uncertain whether they will produce the same effects, what their side effects are, or how safe they are for regular use. These are usually referred to as research chemicals because as the name implies they’re still in the R&D phase, although sometimes there is little to no research being done if pharmaceutical companies have little interest. Another term that is used that may be more common to some is ‘designer drug’. Two such substances in the –afinil family are bisfluoromodafinil and fluorafinil, though when searching for them you may only see them as CRL-40,940 and CRL-40,941. Since they aren’t being sold by any major company, they still carry scary laboratory names.

 Safety first

Very little is known about both bisluoromodafinil and fluorafinil at this time and the majority of information that is out there is just based on personal experiences that people have had with them. Often these research chemicals are produced in small, unregulated laboratories in China. Buying these designer drugs when they’re in their infancy is dangerous. Without proper studies, no one knows precisely how much to take, so they make an educated guess based off of their experiences with similar products. This is extremely risky: While two products may produce similar effects, their toxicity can be wildly different! For instance, both aspirin and acetaminophen reduce pain in similar ways. A person suffering from arthritis could take 3 grams of aspirin in a single day. If you took three grams of acetaminophen, you could die.

Making matters worse, you have no clue about any possible long term side effects. It could be many months or even years until there is reliable information about these two chemicals since modafinil is so effective at what it does there is really no incentive for labs to find a successor. Stick to what works, don’t take unnecessary risks when a perfectly proven product exists, and is readily affordable.

What’s next for Modafinil?

So then what is next for modafinil? Well, you can be certain that modafinil will be around for a long time, unless a pharmaceutical company invents a better version of it and can obtain a new patent, guaranteeing more profits. Even so, most analogs do not completely replace the previous drug. Modafinil has been very effective at not just the intended uses of things like focus, wakefulness, being alert, and helping out with problems like narcolepsy, but also has been shown to benefit stimulant addicts along with therapy. With no real risk of abuse or addiction it is one of the safest drugs of this kind on the market, especially when compared to commonly used things like Adderall or Ritalin with have been known to be abused and can be very addictive if used improperly. Modafinil is great at what it does and going to be around a long time doing it.

Modafinil in the News

Modafinil in the News is a segment where we bring some of the latest developments in the modafinil world together here on Modafinil.co.uk

Modafinil, Schizophrenia, and Shenanigans

A study from 2008 in India reported that modafinil was a useful aid to patients taking atypical schizophrenia medications, specifically Olanzapine, Risperidone, and Clozapine. These medications are more affordable in underdeveloped countries and therefore are more commonly used to treat the prevalent mental disorder. Unfortunately they come along with two problematic side effects: Weight gain and daytime drowsiness. The researchers immediately thought of modafinil and put it to use.

And then they did so again in 2014, and once more in 2015. Or did they? Discover Magazine noted that the text between the 2015 and 2008 versions was 88% identical, and that one of the original authors works on the editorial board of the journal where the studies were published.

So, while the first test may have shown that modafinil helped these patients, it seems that any further tests could be nothing more than a fabrication. Hopefully some law-abiding westerners can take this brilliant idea and make it legit.

Smarter, safer, so says Scientific American

Safe, says the study

Scientific American has reported on a University of Oxford study which examined over 24 modafinil related investigations. What for? The Oxford researchers were looking to find solid evidence that modafinil helps with cognition. It’s been a hotly debated subject because every test has used a variety of different methods and that creates inconsistency. How do you test cognition, or brain power, anyway?

Well, the results came in loud and clear: The more complex the task in the study, the better the modafinil patients did compared to placebos. The simple tests showed no discernable improvement with modafinil, meaning that any difference they saw was still within the margin of error on the study.  Best part, they found no negative mental side effects from using the pills in any study, so they’re safe.

So what’s that mean for you? Get out there and put your pills to good use. Don’t waste them on the simple stuff, find something challenging that’ll really get the gears turning in that head of yours.

A New Formula for Narcolepsy

As patents expire, companies seek to find new ways to get their brand-name power back. One of those is by crafting up a new formula. The same modafinil when combined with another medicine in the same pill becomes an entirely new drug in the eyes of the patent office, and that means big profits for the pharmaceutical company. Theranexus is a new company pushing a new blend of their own medicine with modafinil to be even more effective for fighting narcolepsy.

Interestingly they’re backed by some pretty big people. CEA, one of the most important research institutes in France, is backing their project and pushing it forward.

When it comes to good modafinil research (and not that Indian funny business) the more the merrier, I say.
